Explanation of The Musical Life of LOVEY FORBES Written by The man himself, Lovey L. Mozomdee Forbes In Providenciales T C I 9th November, 1998
I, Lovey Lorett Christable Augustine Mo-zom-dee Forbes, was born in North Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands. My Daddy's name was Jesse Christopher Forbes; he was better known to many people as Baba Tor or Chrishtor. He was a great man in his years on earth. To start briefing his life, I'd have to start with his personality: he was a man of love; he was a carpenter, a mason, a farmer, and the owner of two big Caicos Sloops, and later a larger motor vessel. In the community he was also a policeman, a preacher, a landowner, landlord, a helper to many, although he was helped by many. You will hear more about him, when I write his biography "The Life Story of Jesse C. Forbes."
My mother's name was Loris Transita Forbes. She was from Bottle Creek, in the south area called Papa Joe or Papaw Joe. Now, she also was a very great woman, a leader from her birth, the first child of the outstanding Claudius Williams Senior, of the same place (Papaw Joe), B C North Caicos. She was the first school teacher in Whitby, North Caicos. She was a music teacher and played the organ in the church. She was known for many other deeds that she had done, in her years on earth. The rest of my mother's stories will be mentioned in "LORIS FORBES TRUE LIFE STORIES."
I have brothers and sisters, a wife and children, relatives and friends, but I'll tell you more about them as time permits.
Now, let me take you step by step through my musical life. At age three, which is as far back as I can remember, my daddy bought me a mouth music or harmonica, and that instrument was the first one that I played. I used to have lots of musical toys to play with such as trombone, guitar, flute and many others.
When I was eleven years old, one of my homeboys by the name of Orthniel Musgrove had a big box guitar, and he showed me how to hold the three positions that make up the A chord. That was my beginning stage of really learning to become a musician.
At age thirteen, during my four years schooling in Grand Turk (the capital of the Turks and Caicos Islands), I was introduced to the baritone horn by the late great and leading musician of the Turks and Caicos Isles in his years, the most honorable and chief musician, Nat Selver.
Uncle Nat, (as we used to call him) taught me how to read musical notes. For three years I played the baritone in the Junior Brass and Reed Band in Grand Turk, and I couldn't play it without looking on the music sheet. God blessed Uncle Nathaniel Selver for teaching me the true knowledge of musical notes and the values of them. I left the Turks and Caicos Islands in June of 1966, for the second time to live in the Bahamas with my parents. While there, through ages 17 and 18, I used to play guitar and bass with the Baptist Church in Seagrape Grand Bahama Island. I also played with a number of gospel groups there. At the end of my eighteenth year I went to school and learned to play the organ. Soon after the gospel group, Cooling Waters, took me into their band, to play the organ.
From then on my musical fame begun to spread, and other groups and bands wanted me to play organ for them.
In 1969 the Bahamas number one singer at that time, Smokey 007, came to Freeport Grand Bahama to perform for a weekend, but after the last show, the manager of Tropicana Club asked him to stay over for a month. The whole band decided to stay in Freeport with Smokey, except Welly the organist. So they needed an organist (Smokey never liked performing without an organist). That's where I got into the big music scene.
I played with Smokey 007 and The Exciters from 1969 to the end of 1971. During that time, I experienced my first of many times in the recording studio. I have also recorded songs with Frank Penn of G B I Recording Studio in Freeport, and the Cooling Waters, also of Grand Bahama.
I joined in with a group called "Black Soul" or something, I can't quite remember the name for sure, because that name was changed to "Revolution of the Mind" just after I joined in with them, in the early part of 1974. We recorded a few records together, songs such as "The Cat Eat The Rat," "A Man Needs A Woman," "What It Is Girl", and "The Rats Take Charge, When The Cat Goes Out."
My first solo (45) record was released in March of 74. Recorded by myself, because the band did not show up on the recording day, and I had already paid for that time spot, so I did it alone. When the band saw my record released a month later, they rushed me into the studio to record my second 45 or single as they used to be called back then, and that was "The Cat Eat The Rat," and "A Man Needs A Woman." I did a total of four 45s while staying in the Bahamas.
I left the Bahamas in 1976 and came home to help root up, and establish our roots and culture, of the Turks and Caicos Islands. Since I returned, I have been busy training Turks and Caicos Islanders to play musical instruments and to perform with them. I am presently teaching the musicians and other cultural minded people through Turks and Caicos Cultural Organization (T A C C O) how to become leading and great entertainers to serve the Turks and Caicos Islands and the whole world.
I've spent time in most of the islands and presently I'm staying in Provo. I moved here in the month of January, 1995 with the intention of staying here for five years, till the year two thousand. I have released my first album on the 7th of October 1998, which is still doing well on the market. The title of the album is "United City" with Turks and Caicos Islands.
Just a few days ago, I've completed the recording of "Strictly Love." It is a true love story of the new Adam and Eve, a living example through the bodies of my wife (Heather) and I. On this album you'll find, a song for New Years, Valentine's Day, your wedding day, and a song for Christmas, plus six more. This album was made with the intention of encouraging men, to think of their wives, and to live and love them the way God had originally planned for Adam to live and love his wife Eve. Remember, the marriage you save, should be your own.
I do have a lot more to say, but I'll take a break right here! (To be continued...)
